FINE PURDEY DOUBLE BARREL PERCUSSION SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 bore. High grade shotgun with 29-1/2” damascus bbls reduced from 32”, with makers’ name and address on the top rib. Lockplates, hammers, breech block and rib extension are engraved with very fine, high quality foliate arabesque pattern engraving. Trigger guard, with its pineapple finial and nose pipe, also with pineapple finial, are matching engraved as is the grip cap and buttplate tang. Stock is 1-pc honey and chocolate marble cake French walnut with checkered forearm and pistol grip with small cheek piece and smooth steel buttplate having a long stepped top tang. Bbls are secured with a single wedge through the forearm. An original style ramrod is underneath the bbl in two damascus guides. Front trigger is serrated and the rear is smooth. Also has the patented Purdeys grip safety. Grip cap is engraved “HARE / POWELL”. Bottom of buttstock has a hole for a sling loop and there is a sling loop stud on the rear ramrod guide. Accompanied by several pages of information regarding Col. John Hare Powell who was, according to email messages between consignor and Purdeys, Col. Powell was the original purchaser of this shotgun in 1837 and it was finished with 32” bbls. Col. Powell was a successful merchant and Secretary of the US Legation in London and later was the Inspector General in the regular Army with the rank of Col. He founded the PA Agricultural Society and was a member of the PA Senate 1827-30. SN 2920. CONDITION: Bbls, reduced as noted, retain about 80% thin original pattern with a small repaired dent in left bbl. Lockplates retain 75-80% subtle English case colors and the trigger guard about 60% blue. Wood is sound and retains most of its fine oil finish.
