PAIR OF EXCEPTIONAL FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED FIGURES OF LADY AND GENTLEMAN, CIRCA 1870. Wonderfully carved and painted, the male figure wearing brown pants and cream coat with buttons and brown derby hat with black band. Female figure wearing brown dress with black belt, black collar, and cream colored bow tie with white blouse beneath; shown clutching the side of her dress with one hand. Facial features are excellently carved. PROVENANCE: Originally from an Augusta, Maine home, sold at James D. Julia’s to the present owner Aug. 23, 1989. SIZE: Lady is 14-1/2”, man is 16”. CONDITION: Female is missing her left arm and much of her bonnet, possibly originally had feet; paint is strong, with minor scuffs and wear in spots. The man is also missing his left arm and right hand is missing thumb and pieces of a finger, three of his buttons, which were carved and set into the coat, are missing, one intact; possibly had shoes at one time, now absent. There is paint loss on cuffs of pants. Proper right back side of body with obvious scorch marks. 9-74455 LG (3,500-5,500)
