JOSEPH MANTON DOUBLE BARREL FLINTLOCK SHOTGUN. Cal. 14 bore. Fine, high-quality flintlock shotgun with 29-1/2” damascus bbls with the makers name engraved on the top rib, plus “NEW IMPROVEMENTS BY HIS MAJESTY’S PATENT”. Both lock plates are; marked, “Joseph Manton patent” with waterproof pans and roller frizzens with bushed touch holes and Manton touchmarks on the breech block. Bbl has two damascus guides containing a brass-tipped ebony ramrod. Furniture is iron with engraved long tang, large trigger guard that has pineapple finial and the nose pipe also a pineapple finial. Breechblock, tang, trigger guard and furniture are all very nicely engraved with foliate arabesque patterns. Mounted in a 1-pc straight grain walnut stock with smooth steel buttplate that has and engraved stepped top tang. Wrist is checkered and the forearm is secured with a single wedge. Accompanied by a copy of the letter dated 1963 transferring ownership of this shotgun to Henry E. Coe, III, of Long Island, New York; an ancestor of the consignor. And another, hand-written, dated April 29th, 1963 giving history of this shotgun. Also accompanied by a James Dixon shotgun flask and a leather shot flask with hunter, dogs and dead stag. SN 8807. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 60-70% silvery brown pattern mixed with patina and are sound. Stock is sound, showing moderate to heavy wear with a fine hand-rubbed patina. Locks and furniture are a medium gray patina with no original finish. Mechanics are fine. Strong, clean bores with fine pitting. Brass flask is fine with minor dents. Shot flask is sound with crude repair at the neck, dark and worn. 4-48879 JR677 (2,000-4,000)
