NORTH AMERICAN PICTORIAL SAMPLER WROUGHT BY ANN BAKER, AGE 7, 1791. HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA AND BOSTON, MASS. Worked in linen and silk with alphabet rows and verse above the central panel depicting Adam and Eve beneath a tree with serpent, flanked by pairs of angels above stylized bushes and trees. The bottom row depicting a pair of facing birds on stylized pyramids surrounded by children, animals, berries and flowers within a stylized zigzag floral border within a beveled frame the corners with brass stars. PROVENANCE: Purchased from the Hesse Gallery of Otigo, New York by the current owners, accompanied by a family history of the Baker Family estate of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Boston, Mass., noting that the Baker Family were loyalists to King George and fled to Nova Scotia after the revolution. SIGHT SIZE: 14-1/4” x 12”. CONDITION: Several areas of weakness to foundation linen with small holes, stitching in very good condition overall. 9-90036 MD (1,250-1,750)
