SMITH & WESSON #3 AMERICAN 1ST MODEL LARGE FRAME REVOLVER. Cal. 44 American. Blue finish, 8” keyhole ribbed bbl, pinned German silver front sight and 2-pc smooth walnut grips. This is the rare first model with oil hole. SN 243. CONDITION: Good, all matching including the grips. Bbl, latch and cylinder are stamped with the frame assembly number. Bbl and cylinder retain a dark plum patina with light to moderate surface rust. Frame retains 60-70% original blue under a layer of old crud. A couple of the screw slots are battered. Grips show heavy wear with a chip on the left side and considerable battering on the bottoms corresponding to the battering on the butt. Latch spring is broken, strong bore with moderate to heavy pitting, good mechanics. A fine early American that will clean much better. 4-48012 JR95 (Anderson Collection) (1,500-2,500)
