FINE EARLY FRENCH SWIVEL BBL FLINTLOCK FOWLING PIECE. Cal. 24 ga. 42-1/4” stepped bbls. The rear 5-1/4” is octagonal, the next 2-3/4” is 16-sided and there is a 3-1/4” rnd section with turned bands on each end followed by a long round section running to the muzzle. The front sight is 3-1/2” back from the muzzles. The lock has a chiseled face with the name “MELCHIOR / PIRON” at the rear. The top tang has a sculpted scene of a hunter with a dog firing a gun at a deer. There is a bust of a man on the triggerguard. The left side of the stock is covered with pierced sculpted ironwork. There is light carving around all of the features on the butt. The tailpipe on one side of the bbl group is missing and the wood from that point forward is replaced. The wood on both sides has cracks running forward from the lock. There is considerable worm damage on the buttstock but it is still solid. CONDITION: Metal has been cleaned sometime in the past and some signs of this remain on the bbl. Other metal has toned nicely. Wood has a varnish coat. Action is fine. 4-52628 FS115 (3,500-5,500)
