FINE WHEELOCK SPORTING RIFLE.

FINE WHEELOCK SPORTING RIFLE. CAL. 60. 27” swamped octagonal bbl. The wheel is covered and the surfaces rounded, indicating that this is probably late. The pan cover has a pushbutton release. Double set triggers. The very heavy buttstock is built from two pieces of wood and was apparently originally made that way. There are internal grain cracks in the lower half of the stock that may have required this addition during manufacture. There is a paper sticker inside the lid of the patchbox, “GROSSE HESS. HOFJAGDAMT” or Greater Hessian Hunting Club. The forearm tip and ramrod tip are bone. CONDITION: Fine overall. Light gray patina on the bbl, lockplate, triggerguard and buttplate. 50% blue on the top, pan, pan cover and cock spring. Wood has minor dents and scratches but the carving is still sharp.
