MAINE FEDERAL BIRCH AND MAPLE SLANT-LID DESK. 1st quarter 19th century. The rectangular dovetailed case with hinged sloping lid supported on lopers and opening to a stepped interior of valanced cubbies over short drawers centering a prospect door carved with an oval rayed patera, further opening to a valanced cubby over blocked drawer, the whole stepped above an additional row of document drawers. The case fitted with four graduated thumbmolded drawers retaining original brass hardware, on a molded base raised on shaped bracket feet with scalloped returns. SIZE: 43″ h. x 37-1/2″ case w. x 20-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Originally owned by, among others, Jasper Porter Morgan and Daniel Porter Morgan, both of Sedgwick in Hancock County, Maine, and descended through the family to the current owner. Desk is accompanied by photographs and various documents pertaining to the family in the 19th century. CONDITION: Case has been stripped in the past, retaining traces of original red wash. Backboards, hardware and feet all appear original. Some glueblocks absent in base, others original. Lid and side panel with normal shrinkage, three bails absent. Overall in very nice condition with solid family provenance. 9-95128 (2,500-3,500)
