LATE LANCASTER COUNTY KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 52. 47” octagonal bb. Marked “C. GUMPF” twice on the bbl, once over the other, making it difficult to read. “LANCASTER” is stamped in the same area but was partially removed along with the lower Gumpf stamp. The Rendell lock is installed with only one lugplate screw. The other, possibly for an earlier lock, is a dummy and does not extend through the stock. The wrist of the stock is checkered with the 5-line basketwork checkering typical of Lancaster. The patchbox is also typical Lancaster for the 1840 period or later. From the F. P. L. Mills collection, #96 on his inventory. CONDITION: Rust/brown patina overall with moderate to heavy pitting around the nipple. Stock has been broken through the lockplate screw with cracks at the rear and along the forearm. Iron ramrod is a replacement. No half-cock notch on the lock. 4-52627 X1 (1,500-2,500)
