SCRIMSHAWED POWDER HORN “A. J. BETTS”. About 12” in length of light green to black cow’s horn with faceted, carved spout engraved in geometric designs with a slightly domed base plug secured with wooden pegs. About half the body of the horn is covered with a variety of scenes including a 2-masted sailing ship with American flag, a hunter with three dogs chasing a buck, the name “J.A. Betts” and draped American flags with an American shield surmounted by a spread-winged American eagle, all intermixed with a garland of acanthus leaves. Jesse A. Betts is found in the 1860 Federal Census as being 31 years old, born in 1829 in New York, but in 1860 living in Washington, Door, Wisconsin. CONDITION: Good to very good. There are a few small bug holes and a crack in the body. Carving shows light wear with some minor chips & scratches. 4-59173 JR491 (600-900)
