LARGE SCRIMSHAWED POWDER HORN “ALAN HALL, ST. JOHN, 1778”. Large yellowish-green cow’s horn approx. 17” in length x about 4” at base end. It has a slightly domed plug secured with wooden pegs and has a homemade wood screw strap stud in center. It is very nicely carved with a relieved area in center and again toward spout with two rings near tip and has a faceted tip. Middle raised area is lightly scrimmed showing substantial wear and appears to be scrimshawed with flags & other unidentifiable decorations followed by what looks like a lobster. In the years 1775 and 1776, American forces attempted unsuccessfully to capture Canada from the English, and fortifications at St. John occupied a critical position along the invasion route. CONDITION: Very fine. Shows considerable wear with a very old chip on bottom ring with substantial wear on butt end of horn. No apparent bug damage. 4-60228 JR492 (1,500-2,500)
