CARVED & SCRIMSHAWED POWDERHORN “THOMAS WILLIS NELSON 1808”. Yellow to green to brown cow’s horn, about 14” long with a 3” flat plug secured with wooden pegs that has a stud & ring in center. Body of horn is carved with seven raised rings, having scalloped edges with light decoration on five of them. The sixth & widest band is scrimshawed with the names of various forts including “Eagle”, “Saratoga”, and “Ticonderoga” & “Preble” with the date “1810”. The butt end of the horn is scrimshawed “THOMAS WALLIS NELSON” with the date “1808”. CONDITION: Very fine. One or two minor spots of bug damage on butt edge, otherwise it is sound and clean with light wear on scrimshaw. A fine War of 1812 horn. 4-60231 (1,250-1,750)
