PENNSYLVANIA RIFLEMAN’S TYPE SCRIMSHAWED POWDER HORN “P. J.”. Yellow cow’s horn, approx. 13” long with a 2-7/8” flat plug in the butt end with a wire staple in center. It has a raised rib near the round spout end that has, what is probably, the orig plug. There is a handmade wood screw that was used for a strap hangar near the ring and still has a piece of the orig strap. Body of horn is beautifully scrimshawed with ink or other stain highlight which greatly emphasizes the well-rendered decorations. Features initials “P.J.” in an elliptical panel with a Masonic emblem & numerous animals including a deer, a turtle, a bird, a dog, a mermaid & a spread-winged American eagle holding arrows & olive branches in its talons with other smaller animals with very beautifully detailed leaves & branches. CONDITION: Shows light to moderate wear with carving having a raised appearance with all the figures and decoration sharp & clean. 4-60232 JR494 (2,500-4,000)
