DEWITT CLINTON (1769-1828) AUTOGRAPHED LETTER. Politician. 7-3/4” x 13” autograph letter signed, Albany, December 8, 1827 to the Reverend Robert Baird. “…At the request of my old friend and pastor the Rev. Dr. Noble. I send the enclosed paper _____…”. Baird studied theology at Princeton and taught there for five years. In 1827 he became an agent in New Jersey for the American Bible Society. Clinton served as State Senator, United States Senator, Mayor of New York and Lieutenant Governor before being elected Governor of New York from 1817 to 1823 and from 1825 until his death in 1828. He was instrumental in the construction of the Erie Canal. 9-71978 (150-250)
