BARSTOW 1808 CONTRACT MUSKET. CAL. 69. 42” rnd bbl, marked “EXETER / …& CB” at the rear of the lockplate. There is a large eagle in front of the hammer. Joshua and Charles Barstow, Exeter, New Hampshire, delivered 2,375 of their 2,500 contracted muskets. The layout of markings is not standard. The large eagle has replaced the US in front of the hammer, causing the Barstow marking to be moved to the rear of the lockplate. There is a heavily pitted area below the eagle, which might have contained the US. There do not appear to be any proof marks or inspector marks, but the lock appears to be original flintlock. The face of the frizzen has been refaced. The ramrod is probably a replacement. CONDITION: Rust/brown patina with moderate pitting and crusty surface rust. Wood is missing a large splinter on the right side of the forearm, otherwise normal handling marks. Lock is good. Swivels have been removed. 4-52676 FS134 (2,500-3,500)
