AMMI PHILLIPS (American, 1788-1865) PORTRAITS OF A MAN AND A WOMAN. Listed in Ammi Phillips: Portrait Painter, 1788-1865 by Barbara C. & Lawrence B. Holdridge. Page 51, No. 222 “Man with turned down collar” and No. 223 “Lady in cap”. Oil on canvas portraits show a young man seated in a red chair facing left in half view holding an open book titled “Materia Media” (Medica). He wears a black coat with turned down collar, black vest and tie and a white shirt. Medical book may indicate that he was a doctor. Woman faces right and is seated in the same type of chair. She wears a lace bonnet, black dress with lace collar. She holds a piece of lace in her lap and part of a pocket watch is seen with an ornate clock key fob which is similar to the one seen on the man’s vest. Housed in matching modern gilt molded wood frames. Accompanying the portraits is the above mentioned book. PROVENANCE: Deaccession from the Museum of Art, Science & Industry, Bridgeport, Connecticut. SIZE: 31-1/2” x 27”. CONDITION: Very good, restored with inpainting. 9-74700 FP (12,500-17,500)
