VERY RARE GILBERT 1798 CONTRACT MUSKET.

VERY RARE GILBERT 1798 CONTRACT MUSKET. Cal. 69. 44-1/2” rnd bbl, marked “PW / NR” at the rear. The lockplate is marked with script “US” above “D.GILBERT” in front of the hammer and the date 1801 on the tail. Daniel Gilbert delivered only 875 of his contracted 2,000 Model 1798 muskets. Appears to be original flintlock, but the frizzen spring and hammer screw are replaced. CONDITION: Rust/brown patina on buttplate, triggerguard and lockplate. Bbl and bbl bands have been lightly cleaned but some rust and light pitting remains. Wood has been cleaned and lightly sanded and there is a long sliver missing on the bottom of the stock in front of the triggerguard. Lock is good. 4-52821 FS131 (2,000-2,500)
