UNUSUAL SMITH & WESSON JAPANESE MARKED #3 RUSSIAN 1ST MODEL REVOLVER. Cal. appears to be 44 American. Original nickel finish with 8” keyhole ribbed bbl, commercial bbl address, 2-pc smooth walnut grips. Lanyard loop stud replaced with a screw. Bottom flat of the bbl, below the ejector housing, is stamped with an anchor and two wavy lines of the Japanese Navy markings. No reference can be found of a Japanese contract for the 1st Model Russian, however, the Japanese Navy mark appears authentic and the chambering for the 44 American caliber is not listed. Grips are unnumbered. Assembly number 843 appears under the grip on the grip frame and correspondingly on the bbl, latch and cylinder. SN 9360. CONDITION: Good, plus. Cylinder and trigger guard retain about 50% original nickel while the remainder of the revolver has been cleaned to bare metal. Screw heads have been dressed and there is fine pitting over the bbl and frame. Grips retain most of an old refinish. Mechanics are good, although a little stiff and the bore is strong but dark with pitting. A rare and unusual revolver. 4-47936 JR26 (Anderson Collection) (1,000-3,000)
