*SCARCE NEWTON ARMS SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 256 Newton. SN None visible. Made in Buffalo, NY, this beautiful rifle was far ahead of its time. It has 24” tapered rnd bbl with sleeve mounted front sight; 2-leaf adjustable rear sight and a striker mounted peep sight. It has conventional dbl set triggers and is mounted in a straight grain American walnut stock with trim schnable tip checkered forearm with capped pistol grip and a small sweeping cheek piece. The butt has a very old collapsed ossified solid red pad. Some of the advanced features that Mr. Newton employed were six small locking lugs on the bolt head and two smaller ones on the bolt body. He also employed a striker safety. The floorplate was attached to the main receiver screw for convenience of take down. He used a Mauser type extractor. His receivers were dbl square bridge. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal retains 95-97% strong bright original blue. Wood is sound with a filled swivel hole near the toe and is missing the front swivel, otherwise has minor handling and use nicks and marks and retains most of its fine oil finish.
