NEW ENGLAND SPLIT-BANISTER-BACK SIDE CHAIR IN RED PAINT. Probably Connecticut. Last quarter 18th century. The bold arched scalloped crestrail over four split spindles flanked by turned stiles with flattened mushroom finials, joined to the trapezoidal woven rush seat, raised on spool-turned frontal legs and joined by a sausage-turned double box stretcher. SIZE: 43″ h. of back. PROVENANCE: From an eastern Connecticut collection. CONDITION: Surfaces retain much of the old red paint, areas of legs and stiles are ‘skinned’; old repair to lower slat on back; proper right rear leg shortened with applied plastic extender.
