OUTSTANDING ORIENTAL EXPORT NEEDLEWORK AND PAINTED PORTRAIT. Central painted portrait of a young sailor with brown mustache wearing sailor’s suit and hat with “USS Baltimore” ribbon. Framing the portrait which is on silk is a flower border with spread wing eagle having banner “U.S. NAW”. Bottom with crossed US flags with sailor’s bow knot. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame. Circa 1900-1910. A fine example of a White Fleet piece of memorabilia. Probably done in November or late October of 1907 when the Great White Fleet visited Japan and China. SIGHT SIZE: 27-1/2” x 19”. CONDITION: Generally very good. Some discolor to background silk and small loss to silk background above eagle. 9-71314 (2,000-3,000)
