DUTCH ‘STAART’ HOODED WALL CLOCK. Mid-19th century. This fine example with arched molded hood above the astragal door flanked by engaged Corinthian half-columns, opening to the conforming painted arched dial decorated with a Dutch village scene, above the Roman numeral chapter ring and subsidiary brass alarm dial mounted with brass filigree hands, the dial center further paint-decorated with two figures on a green cloud-like ground centered by stamped brass figural spandrels; the single train brass movement striking on a bell, chain-driven with single weight, the pendulum recessed within the shaped and paint-decorated case with fretted scrolled side brackets and tri-form apron, centering a pressed brass lenticle of classical form, the apron paint-decorated with a scene of a canal and windmill, the sides floral-decorated, all on a gray ground. SIZE: 50″ l. x 13-1/2″ overall w. x 8″ d. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from the estate of Sidney Wetmore Davidson ( 1894-1979 ), Brooklyn Heights, New York, to the present owner, a grand-daughter. Mr Davidson was founding partner in the New York Law Firm, Davidson, Dawson and Clark, and an avid collector of clocks that he hunted down in New York and Boston. Once a week, his cloak restorer visited his home in Brooklyn Heights to wind the clocks and undertake any necessary repairs. Mr. Davidson gave some of his clocks to the Brooklyn Museum where he was Chairman of the Governing Committee for many years. Pieces that were not kept by the family, were sold at Sotheby’s New York after his death. CONDITION: Clock appears totally original with no restoration. Very good overall. 9-94923 (1,500-3,000)
