UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF COMMODORE JOHN BARRY “FATHER OF THE U.S. NAVY”. Oil on canvas half portrait shows a middle aged man looking left dressed in a dark coat with large round brass buttons. He has blondish/red hair and blue eyes. Housed in its original pierce decorated fancy frame with an oval window against a square canvas. Frame is as is but generally intact. The back with a New York canvas stamp. PROVENANCE: Painting descended in the Barry family. A letter accompanies lot which indicates descent through the Barry family. NOTE: John Barry (1745-1803) lived in Philadelphia and commanded a variety of ships including the “United States”. The U.S. Navy has named four destroyers in honor of Cmdr. John Barry.
