RARE SAN FRANCISCO POLICE DEPT. MEDIUM FRAME LIGHTNING RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN S.F.P.2. Standard grade rifle with 26” rnd bbl, full magazine with German silver Rocky Mountain front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. The lower tang has the San Francisco Police markings in place of the normal serial number. It is fitted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut wood with 2-pc forearm that has incised dbl line borders and it has a straight stock with crescent buttplate. The Colt Factory letter shows that this was shipped to the San Francisco Agency on June 30, 1898. It is shown in the Colt records as SN 82967 with a note of the SFP 2 on the tang. There were 150 of these guns in this shipment. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 93-95% thin original blue with nicks and scrapes, strong and bright in the sheltered areas. Magazine tube retains about 95% strong bright original blue. Receiver retains 92-94% original finish with a series of fine scratches on the left side and more on the upper and lower tangs. Hammer retains most of its faded original case colors and the buttplate traces of original blue with dings on the heel and toe. Forearm is missing a sliver from the left side, otherwise the wood is sound with the forearm being dark hand polished and the buttstock retaining 80-85% original varnish with light nicks, scratches and dings, a few light bruises and a long scratch now the left side.
