INCISED CARVED FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. NSN, cal. .38, 39” oct. bbl. Marked on top of bbl what appears to be “J*L” and believed to be Joseph Long. See “The Kentucky Rifle And Me” by Edith Cooper, for what appears to be identical examples of Long’s signature. The Golcher lockplate has had extensive alteration inside and out. The roller frizzen has an extension on the tail to keep it from rebounding too far. The lockplate tumbler, bridle, and sear carry the number 7. All other internal parts are replacements. The pan is brazed on the inside and has an extension extending downward to hold the main spring. The cock appears to be from a smaller lock. The cavity in the stock has been filled to make the lock tighter. In addition to the carving the stock has a number of silver inlays including 3 cross shaped bbl key escutcheons and four fish on each side of the forearm. There is also a cross shaped silver band in front of the tail pipe. CONDITION: Very good to fine with minor wear on the stock and bbl. This is a very attractive piece. 4-48364 (8,000-12,000)
