BARNETT INDIAN TRADE MUSKET. Cal. about 64. Fine half-stock trade musket with 42” oct. to round barrel with bottom rib having two iron guides retaining a replacement German silver tipped brass ramrod. The lockplate is marked in front of the hammer “1866/BARNETT”, with a stamped fox behind the hammer. The stock is straight grain walnut with a 4-1/4” brass serpent sideplate. The triggerguard is iron with plain finials and is very large with long iron trigger. The forestock is secured with a single pin. The wrist is checkered and the butt plate is flat brass with four screws on the face and one on the tang. Accompanied by a letter from Rock Island Auction company stating that this musket was sold as Lot No. 2548, in their May 2002 auction and was from the estate of Oscar Hoffman, Saskatchewan, Canada, and that Mr. Hoffman had been a collector of Indian artifacts for over 40 years. CONDITION: The iron retains an even dark brown patina with light surface rust, heavy around the nipple and breech end of the barrel. The stock is missing a chip in back of the top tang and has a crack in front of the triggerguard and otherwise retains a fine old hand rubbed patina. The checkering is worn smooth.
