FINE NEW ENGLAND PAINTED FOLK ART SEWING BOX. 2nd half 19th century. This whimsical painted sewing box in the form of a stepped back cupboard, all polychrome paint-decorated with floral sprays and carved with leaftips. The top with conical finial gallery and serpentine molded edges above the case with open wallpaper-lined compartment fitted with six rods mounted with spools of thread above a long drawer with carved leaftip molding, the side panels similarly carved, stepped back on the lower case surmounted by serpentine molded edges, fitted with a long drawer and side panels similarly carved, all with a shaped apron. SIZE: 10-1/2″ h. x 12″ w. x 7-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Chad Richards, Camden, Maine. CONDITION: Overall very fine, painted surfaces are original with expected alligatoring, crackle and wear, some later paint to proper right front edge. 9-94701 (4,000-6,000)
