RARE DELUXE MEDIUM FRAME COLT LIGHTNING RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 16566. Very rare early rifle with 26” oct bbl, full magazine, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. It is made without sliding breech cover and has a safety in the trigger bow. It is fitted with about 2X fine American walnut wood with checkered 2-pc forearm and pistol grip stock with crescent buttplate. The grip cap is checkered to match and it has an oval gold initial plate on the bottom. The receiver is case colored. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl and magazine tube retain 97-99% strong bright blue and the receiver 65-70% bright case colors with about 2/3 of the right side turned silver. There are a few small dings on the left side with some light surface etching. Left side is bright and strong and the tangs are gray. This finish may be an old factory redo. Tang screw is battered. Buttplate retains 35-40% bright original blue with the balance flaked to moderate patina. Wood is sound with a few moderate creases on the right side of the buttstock and a gouge in the checkering with other light nicks and scratches. Retains most of its original bright factory varnish, the checkering is fine. Mechanics are a little stiff and need attention; the bolt will not slide open all the way. Bore is bright and shiny. 4-52589 JR328 (6,000-10,000)
