VERY RARE CUTAWAY COLT LIGHTNING MEDIUM FRAME RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 66018. Rare and unusual with 8” rnd bbl, slot blank in the rear seat, checkered 2-pc forearm and stub of walnut in the tangs. The receiver has numerous cuts on the left side exposing the internal parts and one on the right side and the metal is nickel-plated. Made from a later series with sliding breech cover without safety. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter over the signature of R.L. Wilson stating that he had examined this cutaway rifle and compared it to three similar items in the Colt Collection and found this one to be very similar in pattern and in workman ship with two of the items, which are listed as “experimental” and “research”. Neither this item nor the three specimens in the Colt Collection are listed in the factory records and it is Mr. Wilson’s opinion that it was made as an experimental or research item for in-plant use or was hand delivered to a Colt Factory representative in the field. CONDITION: Very good. Metal retains 40-50% original nickel-plating with the balance a gray metal color turning to patina on the trigger guard. Wood is sound with a couple of chips out of the forearm. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with light pitting. 4-52601 JR342 (3,000-5,000)
