VERY RARE COLT BURGESS BABY CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 5283. One of only about 970 made. This rare little carbine has a 20” lightweight bbl, full magazine, Baker front sight and Colt reverse mounted carbine ladder rear sight. It has a staple and ring in the left side of the receiver and has straight grain American walnut wood with straight stock and a carbine buttplate with trap. The bbl and receiver are noticeably lighter and the wood is noticeably thinner, as is the bbl band. The loading gate notch is squared with the frame scallop, instead of rounded as in the standard rifle and carbine. It weighs only 5 lbs. 6.4 oz. As compared to a standard carbine that weighs 6 lbs. 10 oz. Accompanied by a Colt Factory letter identifying this carbine as having been shipped July 11, 1884 to Hodgkins & Haigh, NY, NY in a shipment of four firearms of this type. There is a note that states that this is a “light carbine model”. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 88-90% dull original blue, and the magazine tube is mostly a blue/brown patina with scattered fine surface rust. Receiver retains 20-25% original blue with the balance a light blue/gray patina. Lever and hammer retain traces of case colors. Lever latch is possibly an old replacement. There is one hairline in the forearm over the loading gate area, otherwise the wood is sound and shows moderate to heavy wear with numerous fine nicks and scratches and retains a fine hand rubbed patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with fine pitting. 4-52571 JR310 (5,000-8,000)
