RARE COLT BREECH LOADING CONVERSION RIFLE. CAL. 58. 36” rnd bbl. This is one of many conversions done on military rifle muskets after the Civil War. This one has been attributed to Alexander Thuer, Vice President and Chief Engineer at Colt. The breechblock slides backwards in a track with a screw in the bolster guiding it. Only a handful of these experimentals were made as the government was more interested in their own in-house design by Erskine Allen. CONDITION: Excellent with most metal still bright. Wood is also excellent. Bright casehardening colors on the bolt. 4-52695 FS177 (5,000-7,000)
