RARE COLT BERDAN MILITARY RIFLE.

RARE COLT BERDAN MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 42 Berdan. SN 2. Very rare, one of less than 100 ever made in this configuration; reference The Book of Colt Firearms, Wilson, page 475-479. It has a 32-1/2″ rnd bbl with square base dovetailed barley corn front sight and 1,400 yard ladder rear sight. It has a rectangular bayonet lug on the right side near the muzzle. It is a trapdoor style single shot manufactured by Colt in the period 1866-1869. The design was prompted by the Russians who ultimately purchased 30,000 of these rifles. All of that contract had Cyrillic bbl markings and a serial number on the breechblock. This rifle has the Colt’s Hartford address in English on the bbl but no serial number visible. The only number observed was under the slide on top of the chamber area of the bbl. It is mounted in a 1-piece full-length walnut stock with two bbl bands and an iron 1-piece trigger guard missing the sling loops and a finger rest near the tail end. It has a smooth musket buttplate and its original ramrod. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl and receiver retain bright finish, possibly cleaned a long time ago. Breechblock has bright case colors. Wood is sound and retains most of its original finish with light to moderate nicks, scratches and dings. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore. 4-52697 (4,000-8,000)
