EXTREMELY RARE COLT FRANKLIN MAGAZINE RIFLE. Cal. 45/70. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. General William B. Franklin was the Vice President of Colt in the 1880’s. He invented this magazine repeater in 1884 and submitted the plan to the Army, which furnished him with military parts from Springfield Armory to build 50 rifles at the Colt Factory. This gun is unmarked except for the Springfield proof marks on the bbl. The box magazine held nine 45/70 cartridges and they were fed by gravity into the top of the action where they were picked up by the bolt. The action is basically the same as the French Gras with the addition of the magazine on the left side. CONDITION: Excellent. Bright white on the bbl and action, blue on the bolt head and bbl bands. Magazine appears to have been galvanized but solder is now the remaining finish. Stock has a light crack at the rear of the action, otherwise fine. Action is fine. 4-52696 FS159 (8,000-12,000)
