RARE ENGRAVED ROPER REVOLVING SHOTGUN. Cal. 16 ga. SN: 1116. 26-3/4” rnd bbl, including the choke ring at the muzzle. Marked “ROPER REPEATING RIFLE CO. / AMHERST, MASS. / PATENTED. APRIL. 10. 1866,” on the action cover. The U.S. Cartridge Company number 1170 is stamped on the right side of the stock. A note in the Brooks Collection catalog states it was given to him by C.E. Billings who was the President of the Roper Co. and a gun man of some note himself. The right side of the receiver is engraved with a scene of a dog running a deer. The left side has a hunter shooting at ducks, one of which is falling. There is light scroll engraving on the triggerguard and end of the forearm. With one loose original steel cartridge and four contained in a Roper patent soldered tin holder. CONDITION: 90% blue on the bbl, bright casehardening on the left side of the action, mostly faded to silver on the right with a few scattered spots of light surface rust. Wood retains most of its original varnish with some light scratching and chipping. Mechanically fine. Single cartridge is fine, the others are rust/brown patina. About half the solder finish remains on the holder. 4-52710 FS178 (2,500-4,000)
