FINE BOSTON QUEEN ANNE WALNUT COMPASS-SEAT SIDE CHAIR. Mid-18th century. The yoked crest rail continuing to shaped chamfered stiles centering the vasiform splat with scrolled ears joined to the compass seat, fitted into the arcade-arched rail, raised on frontal cabriole legs with scalloped returns terminating in bold platform pad feet, the rear legs blocked, chamfered and backswept, all joined by a recessed block-and-baluster-turned box stretcher. SIZE: 39-1/2″ h. of back. 16-1/4″ h. of seat rail. 17-1/4″ h. of seat. PROVENANCE: From a private collection of a gentleman. CONDITION: Retains old cleaned surfaces. Ears on splat have been professionally re-attached. Proper left front seat block absent, proper right front seat block is a later replacement. Proper left front return is an early replacement, the remaining returns original. Seat frame appears original. Proper right rear leg with old repaired split. Very good overall, repairs and restorations mostly cosmetic in nature. 9-95532 (3,000-4,000)
