PAIR OF QUEEN ANNE FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. Cal. about 62. Fine screw bbl pistols with 5-3/4” cannon muzzle smoothbore barrels with fine turnings, round receiver, marked on the bottom “THO/ANNELY” along with early style British proofs and the initials “TA” with another proof mark. Thomas Annely imported these guns in the French and Indian wars era and later became an American “Committee of Safety” contract arms maker in New Jersey, and an important gunmaker of the Revolutionary War period. The pistols have small flared iron trigger guards with lightly engraved gooseneck hammer and lockplate. The engraving is also around the base of the receiver. The pistols are mounted in one piece wood stocks, with bag shape grips having an inlaid silver trophy of arms on the left side, a fine shield shaped thumb plate with foliate patterns at the pattern and a shell pattern at the top. The butt cap is a silver gargoyle face with touch mark in the mouth. The top tang is engraved and surrounded by raised carving with shell pattern at the back edge. CONDITION: Very good, the iron retains an even to dark brown overall with some light surface pitting on the one barrel which also retains most of an old refinish. The wood is sound on both pistols and retains a fine hand polished patina. One pistol has a bruise at the thumbplate and on the shell carving. The butt caps are fine and undamaged. The bores are dark with moderate to heavy pitting. One frizzen spring is a replacement. 4-48935 JR714 (7,500-12,500)
