PAIR OF BLACK CLOTH DOLLS. This pair of rare and unusual dolls are pictured in the well-known book Collecting Black Americana by Dawn E. Reno. a) The larger doll is 21″, (53 cm), is a girl with black sateen face and covered body with fine embroidered features, individually stitched ears, and black caracal hair, she is dressed in 1910 period cotton gauze two-piece undergarment, with a two-piece dress with a white cotton blouse and blue and white striped linen skirt, covered by an additional off-the-shoulder printed cotton pleated dress of the same era. The stockings are pale blue and white striped ribbed cotton; b) the smaller boy is 19-1/2″, (49 cm), he is dressed in a checkered hat, paisley jacket, red and white striped pants, and paisley shoes. His facial features are all hand stitched but of a more coarse heavier stitching than the girl’s. The wig and eyebrows are made of a thick black wool yarn. The fingers are individually stitched with red thread, and the wrists are sewn to show an indentation. CONDITION: Both very good.
