VERY RARE WHITTIER REVOLVING RIFLE.

VERY RARE WHITTIER REVOLVING RIFLE. CAL. 60. SN: 1. 36-1/4” part octagonal bbl. This large 6-shot cylinder is turned by zigzag lines on the periphery. This was patented by Otis W. Whittier of Enfield, New Hampshire, 30 May 1837. The patent number was 216, one of the earliest patents on a revolver. Only a few specimens are known, all different. Marked “PATENT” at the rear of the upper tang. The SN appears on the rear sight, the front of the cylinder, the side of the receiver and the bottom of the bbl. There is light engraving on top of the frame and rear of the bbl similar to that used by the Windsor makers, it was possibly made in that area. CONDITION: Smooth brown patina with light surface rust and some areas of original finish. Stock has been repaired at the wrist and most of the upper tang stands above the wood.
