SUPERB CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION PISTOLS BY FRANCOIS PRELAT OF PARIS W/ ACCESSORIES. Cal. 50. 8” oct. bbl. Inlaid with gold on the flat tops “PRELAT ARQer DU ROI A PARIS”. Brilliantly browned bbl. The pistols are additionally banded in gold at the breech and have double gold numerals “1” & “2” alternatively on their breeches and the breech plugs. Outstanding with nearly all of the plum-brown finish on the bbls and exceptional bores. The rifling is extra-fine, shallow multi-groove, and the character is typical of the 1850s by the best makers in Paris. The locks and mounts are plain but brilliantly casehardened. All of the casehardening remains. This is also true of the breech blocks, which are case hardened and are in exceptional condition. Checkered, finely figured walnut stocks that are in wonderful condition as well. The locks additionally have an oval cartouche with the maker’s name and address. The Prelat was one of the great Parisian makers of the mid- 19th c. He was prominent first as a maker to the Comte de’ Artois and later the King. These pistols are cased in their original fabulous burlwood case with brass fittings. The interior of the case is done in royal green velvet that is cut in a floral pattern on the inside of the lid and is in wonderful condition. The borders of the compartment lids are also floral and quite handsome. The original accessories remain including the very rare gold-rimmed shell powder flask with patent charger top. (One pin is missing from the top). Case hardened mold and rosewood handled accessories are included. Much of the veneer on the lid is loose with cracks and missing splinters. Both of the lid supports are broken. Also missing is the brass shield-shaped key escutcheon that is easily replaced. Overall a totally brilliant and wonderful set of percussion pistols. 4-48711 (8,500-10,500)
