TWO LOGS AND THREE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS RELATING TO THE H.M.S. LEOPARD. 1) Log book of the H.M.S. Leopard, hard bound with gold cover lettering. The frontice piece having a watercolor image of the ship flanked by Oriental figures. The first page starting “Oct.2nd 1864”. Titled “H.M.S. Leopard at Anchor and Yokohama Bay”. Each page with title and entries for individual days indicating wind and a comment area of ships activity. Six maps showing a circular route of the ship through Asian waters and ten line horizon sketches. Other pages include “Anchoring in Nagasaki Harbor”, “Hiogo”, “Port Louis”, “Madeira”, “St. Helena” and more. A loose watercolor of a sailor dated “March 17, 1861” by G. Izac. 2) A log book covered in sail cloth with first page inscribed as follows: “H. Sayce, Naval Cadet HMS Leopard”. First entry page “Log of H.M.S. Victory Portsmouth, 20 Sept. 1862”. There are only nine entry pages (Oct. 25, 1862) for this ship. Then is switches and the first page is log of “H.M.S. Leopard Oct. 26, 1862”. Eight maps, one watercolor and six line drawings. 3) Picture album with the title page “Herbert C. Sayce”. Album containing 75 vintage photos of people and places including ships, crew members, etc. Most pictures are glued to pages, some are annotated. Images include Jamaica, Barbados, the Orient, Japan, and more. 4) Photograph album with full plate albumen print pages. Most with caption including “Constantinople”, the “Bosphorus”, “Smyrna”, “Salonicaka”, “Larnaca”, “H.M.S. Dallas”, “Cyprus”, “Jerusalem”, Bethlehem”, “Cairo”, “Malta” and more. The front cover having gold monogram “HCS” which corresponds to Herbert C. Sayce. 5) Cabinet card and Carte de Visite photographic album. Having the Sayce family, some identified, others not. SIZE: 1) 12-1/2″ x 8-1/4″. 2) 12-3/4″ x 8-1/4″. 3) 14″ x 10-3/4″. 4) 12-3/4″ x 11″. 5) 11-1/2″ x 9″. CONDITION: 1) All is legible and clear, the bottom 3″ of the book was wet at one time. 2) Bottom 3″ has sustained water damage and loss to some text and soiling of pages. 3) Some foxing, fair to good. 4) Binding “as is”, photographs are good. 5) Binding “as is”, photographs are generally good. 9-95068 (10,000-20,000)
