IMPORTANT PHILADELPHIA CARVED CHIPPENDALE WALNUT ARMCHAIR. 3rd quarter 18th century. Originally designed as a convenience chair, the scrolling crest rail centering an asymmetrical carved shell cartouche terminating in flared scrolled chip-carved ears, above the pierced Gothic interwoven splat with scrolled volutes, the shaped serpentine arms with scrolled knuckled grips on incurved supports, centering the trapezoidal slip seat fitted within a deep arcaded rail tenoned through the stiles, raised on bold cabriole frontal legs with shaped returns terminating in ball-and-talon feet, the rear legs faceted and backswept. SIZE: 40-1/2″ h. of back x 27″ overall w. 17-1/4″ h. of seat rail. 18-1/2″ h. of seat. PROVENANCE: From the private collection of a gentleman. CONDITION: With old cleaned surfaces. Back splat with old repairs and restoration in upper third of splat. Proper right front corner of seat rail with old repairs. Front quarter-round glue blocks original and intact; rear glue blocks have been removed along with chamber pot frame.
