WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (American, 1833-1905) SEASCAPE. Scene shows multiple waves breaking on sandy beach with rain squalls and sunlight clouds as background. One multiple sail is seen in distance. Reflection of clouds and sun are seen in shallow water on beach. Signed lower left Wm. T. Richards 97. Housed in a fine replacement gesso decorated gilt frame. Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Gustav Langmann for his wife Katherine Zinsser Langmann when they lived in New York City. The painting was purchased for $500 somewhere between 1897 and 1919. It descended from Emily Langmann Vanderderker than to Gene Vanderderker Burgess than to Linda Burgess Eikleberry and Bonnie Burgess. The painting was relined in 1972 by Helmer Erickson Studio in Santa Barbara, California. This painting came directly from the family, sold James D. Julia, Inc. Sale 8/22/02 lot #632 to the present consignor. A fine work by Richards at a time when he was executing his finest works. SIZE: 57-3/4” w x 31-3/4” h.
