SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK MUSKET. NSN. 69 Cal. 42” rnd bbl. Marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1827” vertically at the tail of the lockplate with an eagle over “US” in front of the hammer. The 1827 date is also on the bbl tang. Standard proof and acceptance marks at the left rear of the bbl plus “R / 5 / 25”. “EG” in an oval cartouche is on the left side of the stock and “40” is on the tang of the buttplate below the “US”. There are also “AB” and “GS” cartouches on the bottom of the stock. The trumpet ramrod is correct, but the ramrod channel is partially plugged, causing it to protrude at the front. The interior of the lockplate is marked “BH” and “N”. The “N” also appears on the bridle and tumbler. A “Z” appears on the lockplate bolster, pan, bridle, tumbler, sear, hammer, frizzen and all 8 screws. There is also a “J” on the frizzen. An “S” appears on the sideplate, and “PT” on the trigger plate. The left side of the stock near the buttplate has “40 / S.C.” presumably for South Carolina. CONDITION: Near excellent, retaining about half of the Arsenal Brown finish on the bbl and traces of casehardening pattern on the lockplate and hammer. Triggerguard has some Arsenal Brown mixed with brown patina. Buttplate is mostly brown patina with some light pitting. Wood is sharp with minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Wm.
