PAIR OF PHILADELPHIA CARVED CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SIDE CHAIRS. 3rd quarter 18th century. Each with scrolling molded crest rail above the carved Gothic open splat, joined to the molded trapezoidal slip seat rail with arcaded apron tenoned through the rear stiles, raised on frontal cabriole legs terminating in ball-and-claw feet, the rear legs cylindrical and backswept. SIZE: Each chair: 37-1/4″ h. of back; 17-1/2″ h. of seat rail; 18-1/2″ h. of seat. PROVENANCE: From the private collection of a gentleman. CONDITION: With old cleaned surfaces. Restoration to one splat beneath crest rail and in area of quatrofoil element; the second with minor splicing at top of splat, additionally minor structural tightening and repairs to rear legs and stiles at seat frame. Both chairs retain original seat frames and glue blocks. Bottom of each leg and foot has been skillfully restored using laminations of leather shaped and carved to the full form of the original leg and foot. See photo detail. 9-95531 (4,500-5,500)
