MARTIALLY MARKED SMITH & WESSON AMERICAN 1ST MODEL REVOLVER. Cal. 44 American. Usual configuration, 8” keyhole ribbed bbl, pinned half moon steel front sight, 1-line address with small “US” on the top strap and a small “A” on the left side of the frame below the cylinder. No other inspector marks were observed which leaves the martial use in doubt. This revolver is an enigma in that it is in the white, the edges are sharp and crisp, the action and mechanics are crisp and the matching numbered grips have the outline of an “OWA” cartouche on the left side. Inside the left grip in pencil is written the date 1889, the name “W. Sagers/Themont City/Ohio” and inside the right grip in pencil is the date 1889. This revolver is in the correct serial range for the 1,000 piece military contract of December 20, 1870, delivered in 1871. SN 2070. CONDITION: All matching including grips, except the latch which is unnumbered. This revolver shows little use except the bore is dark and lightly pitted. The entire revolver is in the white with a brown patina beginning and some light pitting on the side of the fame and under the grips. Grips are fine and worn smooth with a chip at the left toe and light battering on the bottom of the left side. 4-47935 JR66 (Anderson Collection) (1,000-5,000)
