MARTIALLY MARKED SMITH & WESSON 1ST MODEL AMERICAN REVOLVER. Cal. 44 American. Usual configuration with 8” key hole ribbed barrel, German silver half moon front sight with an oil hole on the bottom of the ejector housing. The barrel and cylinder are mismatched from the frame. The top rib has the small “US” in the usual place with a tiny “P” proof on the right side of the ejector housing near the hinge and in one of the flutes on the cylinder has a large “A” proof. The “A” proofs on the top strap and frame are not visible. The grips are mismatched and no evidence of a cartouche to be found. The frame assembly number is “U2” which number is also found on the barrel latch. The barrel assembly number is “Z6” and cylinder assembly number is “6G”, however, it is evident that this revolver has been together most of its life. SN 1475 as listed in the U.S. Ordinance Report in Parsons book on Smith & Wessons. CONDITION: Good, the barrel retains 15-20% thin original blue with the balance of the revolver sanded to bright metal, beginning to patinate. The screws are fine and retain most of their original blue. The hammer retains about 75-80% original case colors. The grips are worn and smooth with a stress fracture inside of the left grip with a chip at the toe and heel. The hammer will not hold in the safety notch. 4-48921 JR716 (3,500-5,000)
