ATTRIBUTED TO ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP “KNICKERBOCKER”. Oil on canvas shows the one stack steamer “Knickerbocker” sailing right to left having single stack and two-masts. The U.S. flag flies off stern and a Company flag off back mast. There are twenty-seven people aboard on the black hulled ship with white deck house. Name is on front bow and it is seen under gray cloud sky with green white capped ocean. Signed lower right “A. Jacobsen” and dated “95”. The Knickerbocker was a screw steamer built in Wilmington, Delaware for the Cromwell Line having its home port in New York. There are four Knickerbocker paintings listed in the Jacobsen Checklist with none matching this particular oil. Housed in a fine reproduction gesso decorated carved frame. SIZE: 14” x 22”.
