VERY RARE BARSTOW MODEL 1808 FLINTLOCK MUSKET. NSN. Cal. 72. 44-5/8” rnd bbl. Walnut stock. The lockplate is marked with a spread wing eagle holding “U.S.” in an oval in front of the hammer. The bbl is stamped “EXETER” at the rear. Joshua and Charles Barstow of Exeter, New Hampshire furnished an undetermined number of contract muskets to the U. S. Government. This one has no U.S. inspector marks. The sling swivels and rear of the trigger guard are missing. The ramrod is a replacement. The touchhole has a tiny bushing and the frizzen has been refaced. The top jaw and screw are proper replacements. The rest of the lock appears to be original. CONDITION: Smooth, brown patina with light pitting at the rear of the bbl and surface rust mixed with dried grease on most of the metal. Stock is cracked at the front of the lock with a replaced piece above the rear of the lock along with chips at the tail of the lockplate and end of the bbl tang. Rear lockplate screw has been altered. Lock is in good working order. 4-58263 FS4 (2,500-3,500)
