EXTREMELY RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED WINCHESTER LOW WALL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 32 WCF (32-20). SN 66165. Spectacular low wall with 27-3/4” #2 oct to rnd bbl with globe front sight, no provisions for a rear sight and a mid-range vernier tang sight. It has beautifully grained center crotch cut American walnut wood with black insert schnable tip forearm and black insert pistol grip stock with nickeled Swiss buttplate. It is checkered in “H” style checkering. The receiver is case hardened and beautifully engraved with vignettes of a running buck and doe deer on the left side and two bird dogs on the right side, all surrounded with very fine arabesque patterns. The lever has the vignette of a squirrel sitting on a limb eating an acorn. It is fitted with single set trigger. Accompanied by a Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter identifying this rifle and indicating that it was shipped January 26, 1894 with a 28” half oct #2 bbl in caliber 25-20 and had $6.00 engraving. The letter further indicates that it was repaired and returned May 1, 1906. This corresponds with the proof marks, which appear on the new bbl and on the receiver. That is apparently when the caliber was changed. CONDITION: As noted, very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 97-99% strong bright blue that appears to be an old restoration. There are two filled dovetails, one about mid-point on the round section and the other just above the caliber marking near the receiver, apparently from an old scope mount. Receiver retains most of its original case hardening with traces of colors in the sheltered areas with the balance all turned silver. Forearm has a hairline near the tip, otherwise the wood is sound and retains 96-98% strong bright original piano finish varnish with only minor chips and mars to the finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-52459 JR249 (10,000-20,000)
