MONUMENTAL BLUE STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER-DECORATED SHOP SIGN. Circa 1837. This advertising trade sign in the form of a blue transfer-decorated milk pitcher advertising “RICHARD & JOHN SHAW / DEALERS IN / Glass China / And EARTHENWARE / Abergaveney / 1837″. Decorated overall with two rows of tableaux depicting various scenes, the topmost four scenes of the game of cricket, the lower row four panels of a hilled landscape overlooking a large town, a family group in the foreground observing the town using a telescope, all within wide floral and leaftip borders. LITERATURE: For a comprehensive article discussing the existence of these oversized Staffordshire jugs, see The Magazine Antiques, Jan. 1996, p. 192 ff., titled “Oversized Staffordshire Jugs” by Sharon D. Greene, wherein she stated, “The jug shown in Plate V and Figure 1, advertising a Staffordshire wholesaler, is probably the largest such jug to have survived.” That example measured 24-1/4″ in height.
